FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND BUSINESS STUDIES
Postdoctoral Researcher (Karelia, Karelianness and Finnish-Russian border and border areas), Karelian Institute, Joensuu Campus
The position is associated with the activities of the VERA Centre for Russian and Border Studies , as well as with the activities of the Cultural Encounters, Mobilities and Borders (CULTCHANGE) research area of the University of Eastern Finland. In accordance with the Onnenmäki Foundations endowment, the position is intended for conducting research addressing Karelia and Karelianness, the Finnish-Russian border and border areas, at the University of Eastern Finland. The main duty of the Postdoctoral Researcher is to conduct research in accordance with his or her research proposal. In addition, the Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to participate in the preparation of research projects in his or her field and in the supervision of academic theses, as well as to give teaching in his or her special field.
The person to be appointed to the Postdoctoral Researcher position is required to hold a suitable doctoral degree, which may not have been completed more than five years ago at the time of accepting the position. In this context, the 5 years refer to a net period of time, which does not include maternity leaves, parental leaves, or military service, etc. If the applicant pleads to the above mentioned reasons, he or she needs to explain them in the application. Experience in international research cooperation and international researcher mobility will be regarded as merits.
The applicant is to present a concise (max. 3 pages) research proposal and a brief development plan which clarifies the applicant's contributions to the development of VERA Centre and CULTCHANGE in terms of network building, project activities and knowledge transfer.
The Postdoctoral Researcher is expected to have language skills that support the field's research. Good command of the English language is required.
The position is filled initially for a fixed term from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021 (or as agreed), with a possibility of extension when the follow-on funding from the Onnenmäki Foundation is confirmed. The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific programme (positions of Postdoctoral Researcher shall always be filled for a fixed term, University Regulations, Section 31).
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on level 5 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff ( 2,935.55/month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 50% of the job requirement component.
A trial period is applied to new members of the university's staff.
