FACULTY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES AND BUSINESS STUDIES
Early Stage Researcher position (Karelia, Karelianness and Finnish-Russian border and border areas), Karelian Institute, Joensuu Campus
The position is associated with the activities of the VERA Centre for Russian and Border Studies , as well as with the activities of the Cultural Encounters, Mobilities and Borders (CULTCHANGE) research area of the University of Eastern Finland. The fixed-term Early Stage Researcher position is intended for doctoral studies or for the finalisation of a doctoral thesis. In accordance with the Onnenmäki Foundations endowment, the position is meant for the preparation of a doctoral thesis at the University of Eastern Finland with a focus on Karelia and Karelianness, the Finnish-Russian border and border areas.
A person to be appointed as an early stage researcher shall be qualified to pursue postgraduate studies, i.e. he or she is required to have completed a suitable higher university degree or an equivalent education abroad which in the country in question would qualify the person for similar academic studies.
The position is especially suitable for persons holding a Masters or a Licentiate degree in history, cultural studies, geography, womens studies, sociology, public or social policy, political science, international relations or other applicable field. In accordance with the Onnenmäki Foundations endowment, the position is placed in the Karelian Institute. The Early Stage Researcher is expected to complete his/her doctoral studies at the University of Eastern Finland and to enroll in one of the doctoral programmes of the Faculty of Social Sciences and Business Studies or the Philosophical Faculty.
The applicant is to present a concise max. three-page research proposal or a description of the theme and current phase of the PhD thesis, -and a one-page description explaining the applicant's postgraduate study plan with timetables, the current phase of the applicant's postgraduate studies and information on the supervisor of the PhD thesis as well as a statement from the thesis supervisor.
The Early Stage Researcher is expected to have language skills that support the field's research. Good command of the English language is required.
The position is filled initially for a fixed term from 1 January 2020 to 31 December 2021 (or as agreed), with a possibility of extension when the follow-on funding from the Onnenmäki Foundation is confirmed. The position will be filled for a fixed term due to it pertaining to a specific programme (positions of Early Stage Researcher shall always be filled for a fixed term, University Regulations, Section 31).
The salary of the position is determined in accordance with the salary system of Finnish universities and is based on levels 2-4 of the job requirement level chart for teaching and research staff ( 2,033.29 2,535.20/ month). In addition to the job requirement component, the salary includes a personal performance component, which may be a maximum of 50% of the job requirement component. The salary is determined in accordance with the phase of the PhD project and doctoral studies, as well as with personal performance.
A trial period is applied to new members of the university's staff.
