Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.
RTCC is one of the calculation groups at Scania, which performs strength analyses on the chassis and vehicle dynamics simulations on a complete vehicle using FEM and MBS.
The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) has introduced new vehicle regulation for rear underrun protections (RUP). The aim of the new regulation is to increase the security of the passengers in personal vehicles in case of a car accident. This means it is required to increase the stiffness of all truck RUPs according to the new regulations. The new design needs to be approved by physical testing, though with an accurate FE-calculation, variations of the design can be approved by simulations. Increasing the accuracy of a FE-calculation therefore enables less physical tests, which in turn leads to faster development cycles, less waste in producing prototypes and reduces cost.
The aim of this study is to increase the calculation accuracy by further investigations on the material behavior (the effect of rolling direction on elastoplastic material properties of sheet metals), the friction coefficient in bolted joints, pretension and modelling of the bolts as well as failure criteria for bolted connections under monotonic increasing loads.
The proposed 30 hp degree thesis comprises 20 weeks of full-time work.
The work includes:
- Literature study.
- Generating tensile stress- strain curves for several materials and directions .
- Non-linear FE calculations in Abaqus software (preprocessing in HyperMesh).
- Implementation of different criteria to calibrate FE-model.
- Evaluate, compare and understand differences between physical test and FE-calculation results.
- Written and oral presentation.
Specify education and field of study: Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, preferably with specialization in Solid Mechanics, Material Mechanics or equivalent.
