The Beam Physics section of the Accelerator Division at ESS is opening a Master Thesis position on improving the high-level physics applications.
The candidate will join a vibrant and multi-cultural beam physics section within the ESS Accelerator Division. The work will focus on the update and improvements of the Virtual Machine used as an advanced simulation tool of the ESS Linac.
The Beam Physics group in ESS is responsible for the development of the High-level Physics Applications that will be used throughout commissioning and operation of the ESS Linac. To develop these applications, we use an open source Java Based development environment for creating accelerator physics applications, scripts, and services called OpenXAL.
One of the most used application from OpenXAL is the Virtual Machine, where a model of the accelerator run live and makes it possible to interact with it similarly to how we interact with a real machine through the EPICS interface protocol. This makes the Virtual Machine a very important tool for debugging and test of the high-level applications and other services that will later interact with the real machine. Currently, the Virtual Machine is rather basic, and there is room for a lot of improvement which will make the simulation significantly more realistic. In order to follow the rapid ESS developments a full update of the Virtual Machine, shaping its functionalities to ESS needs is required and will be the main topic of this thesis.

It is a prerequisite that the successful candidate has knowledge of Java and good programming skills. The candidate should also have a Physics background, accelerator physics knowledge would be considered a plus.Excellent oral and written English skills are important. To be a quick learner as well as a good listener and communicator is of importance for the position.

Duration & Location
The position is a fixed term, Master Thesis position for a period of six months. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden. The position is to be filled as soon as possible, with a start date in August/September.
