Task Description
Performance evaluation of distributed and decentralized algorithms for traffic rate control in software systems consisting of a number of separate server instances.
Controlling the traffic in such a horizontally scaled system accurately is a non-trivial problem because:
Hardware (and software) instances can come and go, for example due to malfunction/upgrades, at arbitrary points in time.
The distribution of traffic (load balancing) of requests over the available hardware can be non-uniform.
Synchronizing the state of the traffic control mechanism in the different servers can be very costly with respect to available network bandwidth and number of messages needed to reach a synchronized state.
